1 Cotton, Rusty
COTTON, RUSTYThis is damaged cotton, and may be due to defective baling, whereby the fibre is exposed to bad weather during transit. Bad weather before the cotton is picked, and when the ripe bolls are open also causes this defect. -
2 Sledded Cotton
This is the name given to raw cotton which has been picked by a machine termed the " Sled." The sled is a form of box about 8 feet long and 4 feet wide, which is drawn between the rows of cotton plants so that the bolls pass into grooves and are stripped off and fall into the box. Owing to the device also stripping off leaf, twig and bits of the stems, the waste after cleaning in the spinning mill is at least 50 per cent more than from hand-picked cotton. -
3 Nuns' Cotton
An Indian cotton used locally. The crop is a small one, and the cotton is picked by hand. Nuns originally picked the cotton and the yarn made from it was used to manufacture clothing for the priests. -
4 Seed Cotton
This term is applied to the raw cotton in its condition just as picked from the plant. The fibres are still adhering to the seeds which are about twice as heavy as the lint or usable fibres. The first mechanical process the seed cotton is put through is that of ginning. -
5 Big Boefe Cotton
A variety of cotton grown in Minas, Brazil. Has a coarse, strong fibre and staple 3/4-in. to 11/8-in. Yields about 30 per cent of lint. The plant is grown for two or three years, after the first crop is picked the plant is cut off about 3-in. above ground, in/the next season it sprouts again and yields another crop which is heavier than the first. -
6 Green Cotton
A name given to cotton picked in the unripe condition, and met with mostly at the commencement of a season. It contains a large amount of moisture. The spiral twists, characteristic of fully ripe fibres, have not developed, neither has the tubular structure of the fibre collapsed. -

A cotton market term used to denote deterioration in the value of the bales owing to their getting damp, stained, or dirty during their passage from the ginnery to the shipping port. The bales may have been left on muddy ground, uncovered and exposed to the weather as on railway sidings, etc. All this damaged cotton has to be picked off, resulting in loss of cotton as well as time; the cotton thus picked off is known as " pickings." -
